On the air cleaner, I cleaned out the bottom screens. How does the upper screen come out? Does the holder with the butterfly clips that holds the lower screens, does the come apart from the case? Can someone also tell me how the screen on the pony air cleaner comes out.
Thanks

The only screens that comes out is the ones held in by the wing nuts. At the shop we always steam cleaned them from the top outlet down through them real good.Later on we had a little tank made up and set the whole filter submerged down in some cleaning solvent and had air hooked in it to agitate it and then after that would steam clean it out good from the top first. As far as the start.engine cleaner I never saw one that came apart so just steam it from the top down too or in an agitater container like our big diesel cleaners were cleaned. The steam jenny we had was a big industrial one and had real high pressure and volume to it.

Its done with pressure washers but it should not :( or with any water based cleaner, reason water, air and metal are the three main ingredient for rust, many of the cleaning fluids used with power washers are very corrosive, caustic or ammoina based and a pressure washer will make sure it gets into every joint as well as into the gauze, the way to wash the canister is have a container big enough to take the cleaner standing up,couple of gallons of kerosene is all you need, move it up and down a couple of dozen times and let it drip dry or blow dry it,pour in the recomenned amount of oil and twirl the canister about so all the gauze gets some of the oil,put it back on and fill the bowl up to the mark and clip it in place and you are ready to go,cleaning the bowl regularly will lessen the chances of the canister gauze getting blocked.

AJ, there is no gauze in a D6 9U of all the dozens I worked on for 36 years.Maybe some real old tractor filters might have had some in and as far as steam cleaning causing problems the 100s we did over the years never saw one problem with one after steam cleaning them with our steam jenny.

I had one that was really badly plugged and the dust had caked into the non-removable packing above the removable screens. It made a mess, but I set it upright in a tub of diesel and drove around the farm with it in the back of my pickup for a few days. It seemed to be really clean when I let it drain out after that treatment.

take the air cleaner to an engine rebuilding shop and have it hot tanked. it cleans it good and is cheap.
