Hey Guys;
Well I finally got the D4 steering clutch in, Now when I put the 2 piece cover on the small front cover fits fine but the rear large cover is about 1 in too short,All the bolt holes line up but the front two. My dozer is a 1949 with a one piece cover the two piece cover came off a 1955 high lift.What is wrong here?I was told that the two piece cover would work, Is there a 1" piece that fills the gap or this just wont work? Help!!!!! STEAMROLLER

That's not going to work. You have gone to far up the interchange ladder and run into the changes in the tractor main case to accommodate the oil clutch. If you stick to a split cover on a 1F9539 main case you will be ok.

You are correct, I did not know that the wet clutch set up was 1" shorter,Well you live and learn,I will put the one piece cover back on.I guess the two piece cover is for sale,Anyone interested? STEAMROLLER

At the dealer we used to send the one piece covers out to a machine shop here and they would cut it so you had a two piece one. I can,t just remember but I believe Cat had a service bulletin on it and just how to do it but was not a big deal as I think the shop just used a metal saw to do it.Check with your dealer Cleveland Bros. and see if they can come up with the bulletin on it or ask an older mechanic or manager.Cleveland Bros. is the dealer who I worked for in Wilkes Barre here in NE Pa.

I have dropped in my link below-I cut my 2T cover with a sawzall and grinder. So far so good...I am not sure if it will be helpful you you for your unit, but it does show it can be done.

I have also attached a link to a post by BruceOz I found helpful. One note-I found the distance from the dash to the cut parallel to it next to the seat too far back and I reduced it enough to put it under the back edge of the access cover.

steamroller, hey the 2 piece cover i have given you came off a regular blade dozer. none of the parts i sent you came from a high lift at all. they were all from a dozer with the SN 7u33644 also, if memory serves me correct, it didnt have a wet clutch.

But the main case change was at sr #7U29734. I believe the change effecting the top covers was due to the flange arrangement where the two covers meet.

There was a 1" gap between the covers when bolted on every thing lined up but first two bolt holes on large cover,I put my one piece cover back on. I still need the draw bar supports. I'll have it going this weekend. STEAMROLLER:rolleyes:

I have an aftermarket D4 service manual and I think I remember seeing instructions and a really basic diagram on cutting your one piece cover to make it two piece. I will look tonight for the manual and make a copy if the info is there.

Your probably referring to this diagram......seems to produce mixed feedback results.
