Help on a Holt

I was finally accepted and now maybe I can get somewhere. I am an antique engine machinist and have worked on a few of the older Cat engines some of which my company head posted some photos up on this site sometime ago. Right now I am working on a 1918 Holt stationary, the book I have is for a Cat 45. I do have a casting number or part number off of the crankcase and it is A19. I need some photos of one of these engines to be able to see how the governor and other parts are configured on it. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated and when I figure out how to upload photos here I will post the progress. right at this time I have the babbit work all done, rods and mains and the bearings all fit up. The valves I am in the process of making and the jugs will either be sleeved and the pistons ground or build up the pistons and bore out the jugs.

Maybe one of these "sources of knowledge" can come up with your pictures and the rest of us common folk just get to enjoy 'em.

No, not rif raf. My niche in the market is antique engines af most any kind from 1890 to 1950 are my specialty. But that doesn't mean that I don't know about the modern engines and the head-ache causing eletronics on them. But I enjoy what I do and I have talked to some very interesting people over the years. The particular engine I have right now came to me as a basket case that had been sitting in a n old barn torn down for abouut 40 years. it was started by putting a 1 inch rod in the flywheel and spinning it over, the rod would kick itself out when it fired. So as you can see I have to try to find the best sources of information and make some good friends along the way.

Never has been a lot of the old stuff discussed on here. Takes awhile before the right person sees the info request. Even though the info might be out there it's another issue of whether or not the person has web posting savvy. Some are just looky-loo's and never post anything.

I'm not sure how anybody can help him till tells us what size engine he has got Holt 30,45,55,60,75 or 120. Does it have flywheel on both ends or just one end,does it have 4 side covers or 2 and if he dosnt know size he needs to measure the bore&stroke to find ou. I have a few 45s&55s and kwnow where other sizes are but not sure what size he needs and if he has a 45 book thats morethen most guys have hers couple diff.

The Holt I am working on has 4 side covers and 1 flywheel. I will have to measure the bore and stroke and I will put that info up tomorrow after I get back in. I do know that it is a 1914 to 1918. I can also get the casting numbers off the jugs and heads.

What I have is a Holt 30 horse, 5.250 std bore at .060 over and a 6 inch stroke. The pics that were posted as thumbs were very helpful and confirmed my thoughts on where the governor flyballs were located. As I said this engine came to me as a basket case and I knew what I needed to do as far as the work but I really had no idea of how everything was situated on the general assembly. BTW, how do I go about uploading pics to this site

To post photos,the only additional thing you need to click on the manage attachments button below after you have clicked on reply, and a screen will come up and you browse, open, etc. just as you would ordinarily do on other sites. I hope this helps. GWH
