Mickey what serial number D4. Only later models had replacement valve seats, the earlier models have had to have the seats manufactured and the head reworked.

    Default Valves

In a later D4 6U book the valves are listed as 4F212 for the Ex. & 6H3026 for the inlet but there is no seats listed in the book I have.We used to put 100s of them in at the dealer but can,t remember if there was a special parts book just for seats or where we got them for sure.A good automotive supply dealer might have some that will work if Cat can,t come up with any.

Paul, I am certain the 7U series cylinder heads did not have replacement seats, but if yours has them it is possible the head has been reworked by a machine shop. Originally the seats were just cut into the cylinder head casting and the valves lapped in.

Al yes that,s the way the heads were ground & they had to have the head casting seats narrowed up but when they went too far to just grind a seat in then the head casting in our machine shop was machined & a new replacement seat put in but I can,t remember where we got them but could have been this very good auto parts dealer that we done business with & also had cranks ground in their machine shop & other jobs that we weren,t table to do in our shop.Paul, you could try a NAPA Auto Parts store & see if they have any seats that could be used.

    Default UpDate On Seats

Paul I just had a long conversation with the guy that ran our Cat machine shop dept. at the shop for about 35 yrs. & he did tell me that there was a couple sheets of service parts that Cat had with all the seat part numbers in it.Maybe at your dealer go back to the dept. that does the heads & I,ll bet the mechanic (machinist) can give you the part numbers you need as they work with them every day.

MM - The article you're looking for, is an insert into the Caterpillar Service magazine, Vol 22 - # 10, dated May 29, 1953 .. and the insert is headed "Valve Seat Specifications", and dated 15th March 1953.

This insert lists all the valve seat specs .. and insert P/No's, for all Cat engines from approximately 1928 to 1953.

    The insert P/No's for the D315 engine, lists 2 head types .. Head P/No's .. 4F5508 and 3F9903 .. and the valve insert P/No's are .. 1H231 for inlet .. and 1H232 for exhaust.

The inlet and exhaust valve P/No's, will be available from the parts book for your particular tractor.

I rely on my local machine shop/jobber for valve seat inserts and installation. I like to know the brand and metallurgy being used. Also be aware that there are two piece valves out there that you don't want. They are known for the valve heads popping off.
