    Default D4 6U / 30 A differences

after some reading through previous posts, i understand that the D4 30 A is an australian model and has some differences to the american models.
does anyone know what differences there actually are ?

edb you also said in a previous post that there was around 200 made, and they have the equivilent of 7U 42539

what i want to know is will the crown wheel and bevel pinion out of the 30A be able to go into my D4 6U 7542

    the crown wheel is 6B9897
and the bevel pinion is 7F1637

as I understand, cat changed the design several times of the bevel pinion, going from a 12 ball roller bearing behind the pinion to a double row tapered roller bearing.
I dont know about the crown wheel though.

i just need to see if anyone has had experiences swapping parts between 30A's and 6U's as it looks Like I will have a pair of 30 a's
    to add to the collection.

    thanks.

    7U38611-up uses a 3H6281 pinion & shaft and a 5H239 bearing.
7U33913-up uses the 6B9897 crown gear.

    6U3846-up uses a 7F1637 pinion & shaft and a 1B4123 bearing.

I had to cheat and use the equivalent 6U/7U models to check the crown gear as my POS Jensales 6U manual is missing 5 pages, one of them being the steering clutch diagram. It shows 7U1-26503 and up as using the 6B9897 crown gear.

Can't tell you if the different pinion and bearing number is a problem to fit or not. I suspect it will interchange but would be good to have verified.

    thanks very much OM

i can scan and send the pages to you if you wish, I have the Caterpillar 6u Manual. but not the jensales one.
my 6 U is narrow guage so I understand a few of the final drive componenets will be different as well as the equaliser spring as compared to the 7U / 30A
But I am hoping the rest is relatevely interchangeble so I can keep the 6u running and am not at the mercy of the wreckers
each time i need a part.

its just a pity this 30A has sat in the tableand weather which in the wet season has 50 inches / month.
seems to be harder on these old girls then being worked hard.

Thanks for the offer to copy the 6U pages but it's really not necessary. I know the parts are the same in the equivalent 7U model years. Just wanted to relay the fact that the info was not coming from the 6U manual.

If you don't have the late D4 parts manual I'd suggest you obtain one as there were a lot of changes as they got close to production end.

    Default Aussie 30A,D4,,,31A 32A D6

These Cats were assembled in Melbourne , late models,, main thing was the track frames and some sheet metal were built in Aussie , and they were fitted up with the" STEELWELD" winches and blades . if fitted. I have always wanted a 32A D6 , Its same as the last of, US 9U D6 ,, with the last of the 318s ,, they had a little more HP,115 i think it was ,, they tinkered with the govenor spring mostly. You can pick them out easly, by the different fan set-up, & the aussie track frame only has a small hole on top of diagonal brace,, the US 9U has the larger hole. ,Also the engine block on those late motors D4 and D6, the writing CATERPILLAR under ex manifold is different on the last ones,,more BLOCK letters... Will hope to hear a comment!!,, i have been known to be wrong before !!..some of the 30A d4s i seen had the 5 roller track frame as well....Pete

I alwys thought the 30A was the equivalent to the UK 24A and American 39A/40A machines with the D330 engine, time to consult the archives I think.

    29A is the Aussie 44" Ga. D4
    30A is the 60" version
24A is the UK equiv. of the US D4C (60" only)
54A is the Aussie 44" Ga. equiv. to US D4C
55A is the Aussie 60" Ga. equiv. to US D4C
