Default Caterpillar PV15 Track Master Pin Question

    All,

I'm in the process of changing out the undercarriage on my PV15 project. I found a parts tractor that has basically brand new undercarriage (Just Rusty). It's Caterpillar but was probably purchased 50's 60's. It has a different style master pin than what was originally used. It looks like the style of pin that would be found on PPR (Positive Pin Retention) track for those who know what that is. Anyone have any experience with removing on of these master pins? It looks like there is a retaining ring on both sides of the pin. There is a threaded hole in the center that a cork plug is protecting. I’m a little nervous about just beating on in or trying a track press sine I don't want to break it. Any information would be helpful. I attached a picture but it's a little hard to tell.

    Thanks,

    Joe

Dig the cork out, the inside will be threaded (5/8" slow thread?), make a puller with grade 8 all thread, proper diameter socket and nuts (or get the proper Cat tool). Pull the taper plug, then put a pin in the center and drive the otrher (inner) plug out.

You then should able to easily drive the master pin out. Run a tap thru the threaded plug first and be sure your puller rod is fully seated before you start pulling. Heat may be necessary.

    Good luck.
