Thanks Eddie, I will double check that. I know he told me he put coolant in it then fired it up and added more to it as the air pocket started moving. So maybe he didn't crack the bleeder. These have a thermostat right? I'm gonna start with flushing the system.

Cranked her up after I opened the top pony bleeder and filled system. Almost immediately open crank up it started pushing water out of cap. I let it run for a while. It never got hot & I drove it around. It was fine at idle (still bubbling) but at higher rpms it would spit water. I could hear pressure under cap also & it would release when I opened the cap. Little bit of white smoke also. I drained radiator and was finally able to get the petcock @ back of block to drain. Used baling wire to get it open. Couldn't get valve off since its behind pony oil drain. What are the 2 petcocks at the bottom of the pony heads? I opened them & a little bit of oil ran out of each one, then stopped ? I'm thinking I've got a bad pre cup or a cracked head. Guess I need to do a leak down test ?

The petcocks at the bottom of the pony cylinder heads are to drain the excess fuel when ya flood it trying to get it started. According to the book, when it's flooded you open both petcocks and crank the engine through a few revs 'til no more gas runs/squirts out. Then, clean the plugs and pour a bit of gas on 'em and light the gas. Close the petcocks and try to start it again.

Rather than the gas treatment I take a propane torch and apply the flame to 'em for a minute or so, reinstall the plugs while warm and generally, it'll fire right up.

OK that makes sense. I really need to get the manuals coming. I guess a little bit of oil isn't too bad? I am going to run the radiator flush through the system next. I just have run water through it so far. Here are the 2 machines I'm hoping to make one good unit out of. I also have a pretty worn 3J that if nothing else maybe the head will be good if mine is cracked and I can't pin it. I know the track pads on the 5J are wrong but they're new...
