    Default D4-6U "spring part"

    Hi,

I am looking for an odd piece, and to make matters worse it doesn't match the description in my parts catalog. So, here's my best shot at a description: Where the main equalizer spring meets the track frame there are two(2) vertical tabs that stick up on either side of where the spring rests on the track frame, and through both of those tabs, over the top of the spring, is a bolt going through what I can best describe as a "football" shaped piece that stretches from tab to tab. Does anyone know what this piece is actually called? ,and does anyone have one available for me to purchase?

    Cheers!,

A few years ago I bought a D4 7U that had that piece missing on one side, not only was it gone but the tabs on either side of it were gone too. I cut a pair of tabs out of 3/8" plate, welded 'em on and took a chunk of 1 1/2" plate, carved a new piece, drilled the hole and installed it.

As I recall, the D4 J, T and U models all used the same piece (probably with different part numbers). You don't want to run without one on each side over the spring. .if the critter rares up it's possible it can flip the machine over.

I just used a piece of pipe with a grade 8 bolt thru it--will that work? what is the function of the football shape?

Since the track frames oscillate and the spring does not in that plane, the tapered shape of the roller allows it to maintain better contact with the flat end of the spring & promote more even wear.

    thanks rotorbob!

my dad works in San Juan Bautista, so if I am able to catch a ride from him picking up the part should be no problem!

In the "for what it's worth dept", once upon a time I had a couple of D2 J models and as I recall, they were a bit different than the D4's as far as those pieces are concerned. Both of the D2's had what looked like heavy wall round tubing instead of the "slipper" shaped parts on the D4's.
