    Default RE: xr 700

The xr 700 is for use with motors with distributors is it not? The Ford EDIS works without a distributor since it is a distributor-less ignition system, which is just what the doctor ordered for a motor that has a magneto and not a distributor unless someone could figure out how to install the xr 700 into their magneto by replacing the points in the magneto with the xr 700’s optical trigger. I prefer the EDIS since it takes the magneto completely out of the system eliminating any mechanical slack coupling the magneto to the engine etc.

Doh Cat22 Running Ford EDIS4 Electronic Ignition update

When you crank the engine and it is not a full revolution of the crank, and the module has not yet found the position of the crank based on the missing tooth. The crankshaft of the engine can, and usually does, roll slightly backwards at the end of a crank pull from piston compression. I think this may cause the module to lose its place, since it counts the teeth based on the missing tooth. So what I do to get it started, after it has already been primed with the choke, is to crank it twice slowly being careful to not let the engine roll backwards at the end of the crank pull, then on the third crank pull it starts to fire and run.
I was wrong about this drawback to using the trigger wheel electronic ignition. It turns out that the hard starting was likely because of carburetor blockage. Whatever it was cleared up on its own one day when I was clearing land. There was a big puff of smoke and my engine revved up, since then my Cat 22 starts as good as my truck. All it takes to start is two quarter turn cranks with the choke on and let the choke off when it starts to fire and off it goes. It also has a lot more power. It’s like having a real bulldozer now!
