    Default Help with a 955 12A

Brake adjust , I made a mistake eariler about the brake adjusting .Access to the brake adjusting bolt is from the top side under the fuel tank, same as the steering clutches ,and not from rear of the tractor as I said eariler .Adjustment is 3" to 4" free travel of the brake pedal measured at the top of pedal to dash .
One other adjustment to be done is to tighten 2 scews from under the tractor main case .loosen the lock nut ,and tighten the screw untill it pushes the brake band up again the drum ,and then back off the screw 1 1/2 turns and lock the nut . this holds the brake band up from the bottom ,and keeps the band suspended so the top of band is not draging on the drum. This applys to the 12A 955 ,D-46U ,D-47U

THE D-4 Tech old yellow manual I have does mention that some of the later tractors did have a steering booster installed on them ,not mutch shown about this in book prpbably 7U 29000 UP or maybe last of the 12A's

The only steering clutch boosters on the 6/7U's and 12A's are the spring type.

So we're finally getting some sun here in New Brunswick, and I was back working on the 955. Turns out the steering clutches weren't the problem. Operator was. I assumed the hand levers that operated the steering clutches also engaged the brakes. So once I started using the brake pedals It seems to steer fine. My new problem is all the anti-freeze pouring everywhere. It seems to be coming from the water pump area. Is there any kind of plug or something in that area that may be out? Otherwise I guess it must be a seal, or a gasket eaten out. Also when I picked it up the radiator cap was not on it, could it be possible he was running it that was to avoid pressurizing the coolant? would it still circulate enough for the engine that way?

Yes, that is a favorite response to a leaky cooling system....leave the cap loose or off. Seems the pump seal is shot. Be kind to that pump housing as it is unique to the 955, even though the internal parts a typical D4.
Do not be tempted to use plain water as that leads to accelerated corrosion and pitting.
