    Default D315 Electric Set Manuals

Does anyone have for sale or know if Caterpillar issued an OPERATOR'S Manual for a D315 electric set and if so what the form number is? I have a D315 electric set parts book and a D315 engine service manual but would really like an operator's manual for the generator.
Next question is there an operator's manual or service manual for just generator electric sets of this vintage. There seems to be manuals that address just the generator portion of a set but they seem to be for much newer electric sets.
I have looked both on ebay and Jen-Sales for the above manuals but with no luck.

The Operators Instruction manual I have for the D315 Gen. Set is Form #10766-4 and covers SR # 9S5001-up and 4V1-up.

Old Magnet - Thanks for the reply. This was my first time accessing the Cat Legendary Literature List and was surprised at how large it is. I believe the number you listed for the operator's manual is in fact the one that I'm looking for. Just wish I could find out what's in some of the other manuals that are listed. Thanks again.

What I've done in the past was to go to my local Cat dealer, talk to the parts guys, checked out their books and ordered the appropriate one(s). This works really well with the older guys as they usually know what they're talking about, plus they also generally know other folks who either have those hard to find parts or have some squirreled away themselves.

    Default D315

Do you happen to know what size generator end was originally coupled to the D315E electric set? I have an old D315 that was driving a large water pump but would now like to couple it to a generator for backup power. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

I show a maximum of 40kw for the D315 genset in either single or three phase.

You can couple a larger generator end to the engine if that's what you come up with and it will fit. You just will be limited by the engine power.

With a larger generator end, you have an advantage starting large motors and if you have the rack travel etc to supply the fuel for short term overloads, you can ride through some events that will crash other sets.

The ability to start large motors or other surge events is mainly related to the size and capability of the generator end because the initial current surge doesn't require all that much extra engine power (very low power factor - in the range of 20-30% for a few cycles)

The standard governor will have a lot of droop compared to a modern generator set, so you might have problems unless you have things that don't care much what the frequency is. The worst things I have heard of are UPS/battery backup units which switch on and off line as the frequency varies up and down. Most things like motors and lights etc don't care that much if it varies a bit.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time

    Default Gen Sets

CC, all the older gen sets like the D315 and others were set up for a 3% droop where tractors and ind.engines were all a 10% droop. They use a different gov. spring etc. to get the lower droop.
