My after market interchange book shows the same pre-com chambers (non-glowplug) part # 2P483 to be used in D7 & D8 units designated
    17A,47A,48A,14A,15A,35A,36A1-5328,46A1-24432.

I looked up the direct start attachment list for a D7 47A (effective 47A 3678)
and it indicates a #5L6940 glow plug chamber.

The number probably has been superseded but it's a place to start

    Default 17A Glow Plugs

    Old magnet, & dan

I have 2 17 A,s one has been converted to direct start it is D7C early model and the other is a later model D7D with Pony motor. This winter I have been putting the D7D back in shap. I rebuilt the carb on the Pony and tuned the mag. Now it fires nicely.with the Pony no matter how cold I can spin the big engine till warms up then it start easily.
With the direct start D7C it sure takes time to warm up drain the batteries etc.
I would be nice to put glow plugs off D7 E . IN fact i would like to add a turbo on it as well

    Default 17a glow plugs

yes Ali it sure needs them with direct start, even when you us the 24v starter, i dont know what you have to get or change to put them in, i figured someone on here would thow. a pony motor is the only way to go on those old cats, even if you have to rebuild them. anyone whose ever run one out of diesel with direct start will probably agree.

If your going to convert to direct start, do the whole job including the hand priming pump and glow plugs. No way your going to run on the starter to bleed the system on that sized engine. At least not without spare batteries or lots of recharges.

1- What do you have to do to put glow plugs.
2- can you adopt hand priming pump to the 17 A

Here is a trick for everyone to use for bleeding a system without Pony or extra batteries.
1- take an old tire tube and cut out a big enough area or the rubber areound that air Valve stem
2-Mounted this cut out rubber with the air valve stem on fuel tank and use big hose clamp to make sure it air tight on the fule tank
3- Fill the fuel tank with air enough pressure to push the fuel out
4- start the bledding process .

    It works

    Hi Ali,
Basically you need to get the direct start items that came with the D7E option
including the glow plug chambers, glow plugs, wiring, switches and priming pump and the 24v generator or alternator if you haven't already got one.

    Default glow plugs

i have the 24v generator, or its stamped 24v so are the 7e glow plugs 24v or 12v? 7e glow plugs are what you use in the 17a, also the 7e primer pump?

The glow plugs are 24v Part # 4S7824
The glow plug pre-combustion chambers could come from any of the above listed models if they have them otherwise look for part # 5L6940 or possibly a 8S7601.
The D7E 47A effective sr. no. 3678 with direct electric start would have all the parts for change over including the priming pump.
The D7E 48A effective sr. no. 6883 with direct electric start would have all the
parts for change over including the priming pump.

It is not required to change to the straight tooth flywheel ring gear and drive if you use the helical drive option for starter conversion.

There are other priming pumps (different model tractors) that could be used and have a simpler mounting and plumbing, like the through the dash models.

    Hope this helps..........or probably confuses
