There once was a guy who put a jeep engine in a D4 Traxcavator. I think that didn't work out but he later put a V8 Diesel out of a Ford in it and it worked out well. He took a lot of flack on here for modifying an old Cat in that way. I am sure a lot of Cat collectors would not approve of what you want to do to a 60. Myself I think it would be OK as long as you didn't hack up the 60 too bad. Maybe someday you will get an original engine for it. You have plenty of length with a 60. I think the idea of putting the automatic transmission in is good. Then you will have a direct start, powershift antique Cat. Weight forward is good.

I don't know about a 60, but i saw that combination in an article about a D6-9U conversion.

It was 2-3 years ago, and was featured in "Farmshow" magazine. As i recall, I believe it used a Cadillac, or Oldsmobile V8, with the same donor's automatic transmission.

I believe the fellow had rigged up a driveshaft directly to the input shaft of the Cat's original transmission. It didn't have great pictures in the article, and i've lost the issue since. Maybe someine else has it, or you could try to find more info over at www.farmshow.com.

There was a fellow either here or over at the ACME site that had a 2-ton with a flathead ford in place of the OE engine. I don't recall if he ever got it running or not.

Whoops, had a quick look over at farmshow myself. It was a Ford pickup engine.

The General Motors combination must have been another conversion that stuck in my mind.

On the Antartic it was rumored there was a 2uD8 with a 17000 V8 in it. I haven't had anyone verify that rumor but at the Museum at Port Hueneme SeaBee Base there is a "crude" model of the rumored 2uD8 with the 17000 in it. May have been a conversion done in New Zealand or Australia.

A local contractor re-powered all his Cat J621 scraper fleet with 855 Cummins, in the 1980's, because he had such a poor run from the original Cat engines.
At last count, I think it was 19 scrapers that had been re-powered.

As of today, all those scrapers have been traded in, and he runs an almost all-Cat fleet. He currently has 83 scrapers in the fleet .. but I think he gave up on the idea of Cummins re-powers, due to the later Cat 3400 engines providing satisfactory service ..

    Default Repowering

It seems to me that a big dealer or other Co. did have a repowering setup that did use the D17000 engines in the D8s years ago.Maybe OM has something on it.

    Default 2U D8 Re-powers

    Hi, Folks.
I have been told that Peterson Engineering, a long-time Cat distributor in California, did the D17000 re-powers on the 2U D8's to give them more 'ooomph' for pushing scrapers.

Then there was another outfit that put the motors out of the Cat DW21's into the 2U and 13A D8's and I just can't think of the name at the moment. It'll probably occur to me about 2 minutes after I post this.

Then there is Don Mearnes from Ipswich, Queensland, Australia, who has dropped both Cummins and Cat engines into Cat D11's to boost their 'grunt'. I understand that he has a Cummins conversion with 1,100 hp and a Cat re-power with 1,300 hp. However, Mr Mearnes is a little secretive about his antics and I'm open to correction on this.

The D17000-powered 8R D8 mentioned above is still in the same condition. It has been fired up a couple of times since its first outing back in February, 2006 but is no further advanced toward completion. It lives about 5 crow-type miles from me and I work for the owner's family company.

If you want a Cat 60 that has a top speed of around 20 miles per hour, I think a V8 car engine and auto trans with lock-up would be a good way to go. The old 4-banger Cat 60 gas engines did about 700-800 rpm on a downhill run with a stiff tail wind. Most car V8's that I have had anything to do with run up in the 5-6,000 rpm range. Should make for some 'interesting' track wear figures, at the very least. Unless you govern it back a fair way.

    Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes.
