    Default Welcome

Hey Slurry lots of good info here and real helpful folks, they have helped me more times then they know. I would suggest using the search function on the above toolbar before posting, as new owners usually have similar questions, and they have been answered many times over.

Also there is a D2 registry at http://www.antiquecaterpillar.net where you can see who has the s/n near yours, who is nearby and what options are out there.

I bought my first Cat in late 2007 and currently have 8 so be forewarned the virus you have exposed yourself to...

    Welcome aboard,
You've always wanted a D2. Well, there's no reason to stop at just one. Besides the series goes up to D11. The guys here will help you you do everything but pay for it.
    Good Luck

Hi Slurrydog. Profile says you are in Oregon. Whereabouts? I am in Hood River and run a D2 5J. Let me know if you need a look at something.

    'lo again,

My D2 is an oldie but a goody. It was upgraded to D3 sealed rollers several years ago. I've had it since 1969 and have put a bunch of hours on it, though not so much any more. Right now I can't start it. The carburetor is dumping raw gas down in to the cylinders, probably something holding the float valve open. I've been having an absolute hell of a time with the present day gasoline. When I cleaned the filter I got one easy start out of it, but I suspect some of the varnish and crud went down the fuel line.

They used to say "Leave the rig in storage with a full tank to minimumize evaporation. Don't do that now. Drain the tank and run the carb dry. Likewise, run the tank down to nothing before you gas it up again so the varnish doesn't accumulate. It's a different world we're living in now.

I'll rerun a pic of the D2 running last snow storm, also my old D7 3T on a winch job last year.

If the carb has the old cork float coated with some black substance the 10% alcohol in the gas will soak through the black coating and penetrate the float. The float will sink. It takes a while for this to happen. The 87 octane fuel and a shot of Stabil is the best bet.

A cure for those old cork floats is to dry 'em out for a few days, then coat 'em with a good fiberglass epoxy. I did that to the float in my old D2 several years ago and it's still holding. Also running the pony out of gas instead of shutting 'em off with the off-on switch with those old cork floats is a good idea.
