Not a real Cat

I know this is not a real Cat but I have a Agricat I think is a model "F". Does anybody have any info on these? I bought it to save it from going to scrap. It has a hyd. front loader but the bucket is missing. No tags on it. Still like my Caterpillers better! catrjw

According to my info, there were numerous small crawlers known as Agricat, Agracat or Agratrac. The name and the spelling is often confused by owners, and thereby lies much confusion.

It appears that one Agricat crawler was built by the Agricat Equipment Co of of Philadelphia, PA. Years of production are not listed.
This Agricat was available only with dozer blade and drawbar lift .. no loader.
It was available with either rubber or steel tracks, and could be ordered with manual or hydraulic lift for the blade and drawbar lift.
It was powered with a 9HP, B&S model 23A, single cyl gas engine.

The other, better known Agricat, was built by Joost Manufacturing Co of Berkeley, CA, in the 1950's. There were at least two models, the gasoline model "F", and the diesel model "FD".
The gasoline model appears to have been powered a single cyl Wisconsin, the diesel was powered by a single cyl, air-cooled, 7HP Hallett diesel.
Many have been repowered by other engines, such as Kohler or B&S.

This Agricat was a heavier duty tractor than the PA Agricat, and came with a hydraulic blade or loader as standard equipment. It was available with steel or rubber tracks. I don't believe there was any relationship between the PA Agricat Co and the CA Joost Manufacturing Co.

I seem to recall that Joost were sued by Cat over the use of the name "Cat" (which is a registered Caterpillar name) .. and Cat won, and thereafter, the Agricat was renamed the Agritrac. Jay Joost will likely be able to fill in any details, or correct errors in my info.

I have a spec sheet on the model "FD" Agricat, that I can scan and post, if you wish to view it.

A guy from the St. Francis KS area used to bring one of these to the antique farm shows at the county fairs back in the 80's but have not seen one in years. The one he had was definitely a toy with manual levers to lift the blade on the front and back. The B&S engine sat rather low in front of the operator and the critter had steel tracks. I think it had about a 4' blade and at most maybe 4 1/2'. Nothing covered the engine and the operator sat on top of the crawler above and behind the engine. Not much for looks and could only be used in a yard. Don't know how they came up with the name Agricat for such a little machine. Don't remember a thing about the clutches, brakes etc.
