Does anyone know what a cat 70 scraper weighs

According to the cat performance handbook the 8C series #70 weighs 8527lbs, and the 3W series #70 weighs 9140lbs.

It looks like the CPH is way out on those figures, as is common in the CPH, which is riddled with errors and typos, particularly when it comes to info on older items.

The 8C series, released in early 1947, weighed 17,500 lbs, and was fitted with 16.00x20 front tires and 18.00x24 rears.

In 1951, the 3W series appeared, with 16.00x24 front tires and 21.00x24 rears as standard, and was quoted at 18,800lbs basic weight.
The option of smaller size tires was still available.

In 1952, the bowl was extended from 8.7yds stuck/11yds heaped to 10.2yds struck/13yds heaped, and the weight went to 19,920lb.

In addition, 10" top extensions were available for light material, and these would have added a few hundred lbs again.

OzDozer, Were do I find the serial number on a cat 70 or 80? On the 70 I found a plate with a stamping of 4F 2164 and on a cat 80 I found a 5W 86 can you tell me what year they are? or do I even have the serial numbers? Thanks Doug

Doug - I don't have any information on S/N tag location for the #70. However, the 4F 2164 number isn't the S/N, it's a casting number of the part that it's on. The S/No's of the #70 commence with a prefix of 8C or 3W.

The number you found on the #80, 5W 86 is the S/N. This ID's it as a later series, improved #80, with a capacity of 15yds struck/20yds heaped.
This 5W model was built from 1950 to 1955, weighs 26,350lbs .. and the 5W 86 S/N identifies it as a 1950 year of production.

If you found the tag or S/N on the 80, the #70 tag will be in a very similar position. The usual position for S/N tags on towed scrapers is on the goose neck or swan neck, between or just above the wheels .. or on the rear face of the bowl somewhere in front of, or between the rear tires.

The 4F2164 number is the actual part number for the Name Plate on the #70 model 8C1.
Appears to be unique to that model.

Old buddy could you have read the wrong line, giving the weight in "kg" Instead of lbs?

Depending on the when the 70 scraper was build, early ones had the S/N number on the right side of the goose neck (Drift beam) just under the top sheave blocks, later it was on the right side of the bowl, behind the end of apron arm…effective with 3W5367.

We cannot find a tag on the 70 but it has that cat 70 name plate on it with the part number on it that OM stated. It has 20 inch rubber on the front and 24 inch rubber on the rear, any thoughts on possibly knowing or guessing the year and what it holds for yards? Doug

I don't have break down by years but I would guess early model prior to serial number 1431 when that same name tag part number changed to a 6F6424
