    Default BE 10B Power Unit

Does anyone have literature that shows or know if a caterpillar power unit such as a D3400 or 311 was available, from the factory, for a Bucyrus Erie 10B crane/shovel?

D8Pete,I have a sales booklet on the 10B.There is no mention of a Caterpillar engine being used. They list the gas model with a Buda 6B-230,and a diesel International UD-6. I have seen them with an Allis-Chambers diesel in them also.Hope this help. Mike Durkin

    Default B-E Engines

We sold the B-E line at the Cat dealer I worked for till Cat came out with their own back hoes and the B-E used Cat engines in them. I don,t know if you had to order what brand engine you wanted or what but do know they used Cats as I worked on the Cat engines in some of the customers cranes and shovels. This one scrap dealer in town had a 22B truck crane and it had a Cat D318 in it.

Hicrop10 and SJ thanks for the replies. I have only seen gas engines in the 10B's and surprised that I haven't seen the international diesel. I have seen the larger shovels, 15B and up, with Cat power units several times but was curious why a Cat unit was never seen/offered in the 10B. I was just hoping a BE expert could give a reason why. Thanks.

It could be they stopped building the 10-B before diesel engines became popular. The 10-B being smaller may have been sold to smaaler owner operators that perfered gas engines. I see some of the retirees from the BE Erie PA plant where the 10-B was built. I'll try to remember to ask them next Thur if they remember Cat engines in the 10-B

I talked to the guys at McDonald's last week. They said most 10 B's had gas engines installed. They couldn't recall any built with Cats. These guys are 70-80 years young trying to remember something that happened 50 years ago. We'll have to keep looking to see if we can find someone that knows for sure.

    Default Cat Diesels

I didn,t read close enough to see you were asking about a 10B if they used a Cat in any of them. I can,t remember but if others say they didn,t then probably that,s the answer. Most the ones we sold were the bigger ones and Cats were used in them.
