    Default Electric Start Pony Motor

Did the 5T originally come with an electric start for the pony motor, or was it strictly rope start? I bought an electric start set up to install on my 5T D4. I took it off a D2 in the local salvage yard since the pony motors are the same. When I attempted to install the starter on the D4 the dash was in the way and would not let the pony starter bracket bolt to the manifold of the pony motor. Also the fuel pressure gauge was in the way of the belt that runs to the flywheel. I checked my parts book for the 5T and there is no mention of an electric start for the pony motor. Was there a dash manufactured for the 5T D4 that had the provisions for the electric start on the pony motor. Will the 6U or 7U dash that has the indention for the pulley on the starter fit the 5T, or am I going to have to modify my dash to make the pony starter fit? If there was a model of the 5T with the electric start on the pony motor where was the fuel pressure gauge located?

bboaz - The 5T series D4 was offered with an electric starting option for the pony. The 7J & 2T series parts catalog shows it as well. The electric start is listed under "Attachments" in the parts catalog. Marine Cat engines had electric start for both main and/or pony from around 1939, so I guess that is about when it was first offered on the tractors.

Initially a 12V open starter was offered as an option, then later (around 1951) an enclosed starter was offered .. as the early open electric starters suffered from severe wear due to dirt ingress. A short time after (late 1952), 24V electric starting was offered.

There is a bracket, 8B3432 listed for relocating the gauge .. but I cannot see a different dash listed for the electric start option. You will likely need a later version, updated parts catalog to see all the options and parts, as it appears the electric start option information was initially supplied as an insert in the parts catalog .. and your parts catalog doesn't appear to have the info.

On most of those early conversions the dash was deftly cut to provide clearance.
