    Default D2 Head Gasket

I finally got all the fluids and maintenance ( I think) done. The problem I encountered was when I started the diesel it ran fine but the head gasket appears to be leaking oil.seems worse at the front. Power seemed ok. The exhaust had just a little smoke. I know there was head work done by the previous owner and I checked the torque. The bolts were not up to spec so I torqued to spec before firing the diesel. Anyone have some thoughts?
    Thanks...Bill

    Default Head Gasket

About the only thing to do is remove the head and replace the gasket but have the head checked for warpage. I always at the dealer for years coated the head gaskets esp. on older and certain engines with a coat of #2 permatex on them. The older D6 & 9Us had a nasty habit of seeping along side the head and the permatex would eliminate it. I used the permatex on water connection pipes too.

Thanks SJ....I was afraid of that.....I do have some Permatex No 2 and also some Indian Head Gasket as well. I'll bet there isn't sealant on the head gasket now and that is the problem. The motor runs great otherwise.

    Default Seals

I should have mentioned to make sure you change the seals on the ferrules between the head and block that seal water on most those older engines. On those ferrules and seals always put the more open end of the ferrule down in the block and the seals on them also look and you,ll see a little ridge of the rubber on the outside edge toward one end and put that ridge side (mold ridge) down in the block side too and then the head slips down over the more smooth part of the top side of it.

I have a NOS copper head gasket, listed to fit the D2 and R2, so I have to assume it's for a J series D2, which won't fit my later unit.
If someone has a use for it, I'd like to get my $50 back that I paid for it.

Alan...I have a later model D2 5U as well. I guess I will order from Caterpillar the gaskets. I know this will hurt a lot......

I checked the compression release housing and it wasn't leaking. Thanks for the tip.

My 4U is doing the same. I'll be changing mine before too long. Let us know if and where you find one. Thanks.

Well I found the gaskets....all I can say is WOW !!

The following is from an e-mail inquiry about the gaskets.

We do carry the top end gasket set for $412.50 and the bottom end gasket set for $742.50. These are engine gaskets sets-the seals in the bottom set are what brings that bottom gasket set up to a high cost. We also have the head gaskets for $195. These are a modern day heat resistant material with fire rings for $195 and the oil pan gasket is $42.50.
Plus shipping/handling-US orders-estimate only UPS Ground is $20-27

Can anyone tell me if this is about right or should I look further. A Cat dealer in Atlanta has not responded yet.
