If that pipe is the one going to the radiator as it looks like it is then in upside down. The spring part and senser always goes toward the engine block. When it opens then the coolant can go to the radiator for cooling.
Like this....
Matt the second pic is how mine was when I took apart![]()
Yes Matt, the 2nd. picture is right way now.
The gas-operated piston (that is visible on the top of the first pic) is the device that needs to be in the heated water to make the thermostat open.
Thus, it has to be on the bottom, where the hot water is coming from the engine, for the thermostat to work as designed.
Does anyone have a part number on the thermostat used in this article?
My 15 Book shows Part no L-1118 That translates to todays No of 0L1118 . I havn't ever checked whether they can be Bought or not , I would be supprised if The 10 isn't the same number , I just haven't a Ten book with Me at present . You should be able to pickup something from like's of Nappa over there .Good luck LJ
Here is the instructions and number of the thermostat. It was still available from Cat a few years ago. It doesn't look like the picture though, it is a lot lighter made with no O ring. The picture is of an older NOS Thermostat. It also does not come with any instructions. - Wally
I assume the part number on the paper is the cross from the part number on the NOS T-stat?
