Hi Rod,
if you have a water pump on your pony then my guess is that you have a D6 as these pony engines have belt drive water pumps. The D2 & D4 do not.
The mag timing for a D6 is different to the D2-4 ponies.
Scans below will get you there for a D6 pony.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

edb,
thanks, my pony does have a belt driven WP, up and to the right. I have looked on the fly wheel , but have been unable to see and marks at all. I have also looked for and sort of a removal bolt/cover that would reveal marks inside the crank case.
is there a place/markings that will clearly identify this pony??
i have just picked up magneto from being serviced, and asked the mechanic how to time it in the absence of markings on the flywheel. he confirmed that if I bring #1 cyl to TDC on the compression stroke and then install the mag with the rotor pointing to #1 plug wire, i should be there.
once i have TDC for #1, I will mark the pulley for future...
does this seem a reasonable way to get this little guy going??? again, in the absence of timing marks...
thanks

Hi Rod,
the method as described by you via the Maggie Man will get you there.
No1 is the rear (closest to the pony flywheel) or left cylinder looking from the operators seat. Because the maggie is tang drive then you do not have to be exactly on TDC No1 but close to is OK as there is only one tang to align.
For gear drive maggies-D2-D4-you have to be more exact as you need to find the marked maggie drive gear tooth in the timing plug hole to enable sure correct timing.
You still do not appear to have told us what machine or engine you are working on, or maybe I missed it.
There are no covers etc that will let you view the timing marks as they are all internal behind the big flat front timing cover of the pony. If I recall correctly later D6 (D318) pony engines have an X stamped in the drive tang slot of the Maggie drive gear and another X on the Maggie tang to make timing easier without having to get TDC No1 found.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
