D2 5J Steering clutches

I am rebuilding the steering clutches on My D2 5J. I know that the bearings on these clutches are lubricated by oil cups just in front of the seat. I am really tempted to pack these bearings in synthetic grease before I install them. Is this the thing to do? Would interrupt oil flow? This is a hobby tractor, not a work horse.

I packed mine.I also considered changing to a grease fitting with a rubber fuel line to grease the bearing,but in looking it over it doesen't seem as if the grease would get into the bearing well enough.so I left the oiler tube.the oil should just flow down around the bearing flange .Those are supposed to be oiled every 8 hours or so.

If I remember correctly, the later D2 used a grease hose connected to the bearing yoke.

I packed mine with synthetic grease, if you plan on using the oilers you have to drill a hole through the bearing race, not easy

I don't have the parts book for the D2 anymore, it went with the little kitty when I sold it. I seem to remember a field changeover kit to convert the oiler type to greased type that consisted of all the parts needed. I doubt Cat has 'em anymore but you could cross reference the bits and pieces and make your own. .
