939 Cat Track Loader

I am looking at a possible purchase of a 1995 year model Cat 939 track loader serial no. 9GL00512 from a dirt contractor that is down sizing his operation. I have only seen a photo of the unit. He said it weighed approximately 18,000 lbs and was 80 - 90hp. From the photo the undercarriage looks good. Can anyone tell me anything about this model and what to look for when I go look at it. I need a machine to load calache in a 8 yd dump truck and push trees out of fence rows on my farm. Will this machine be powerful enough to do this. I am not sure the picture that I have attached will go thru.

hello Dick,Cat 939 track loader serial no. 9GL00512 is a 1996 built loader with 90hp 3046t updated ,built in japan , improved steering valve ,weigth is 21640 pounds ,(ex 3000 pound weigth mite be air con cabin fitted)
loader has ps-tc 3f 3r planetary trans
1.5 cu yd bucket.

Bruce, thanks for the info on the Cat 939 track loader. They are asking $16,500 for the machine. Do you think it is worth this amount? Also when I go look at it is there anything special that I should be looking for that is a high wear item on a track loader?

the tipping links from the bucket are known to bend ,they should be straight
look for paint cracks on the links

Graham what causes the tipping links to bend? Is this unique only to this particular model of track loader or in general to all track loaders. I would like to be able to push trees with this loader do you think it can handle it without causing damage to the bucket or linkages?

Graham i looked at the link you attached. Do you think this maybe the reason they are selling the 939 machine due to the bending tipping arms and cracks in the leverage arms? I was planning on using this machine to push trees out of fence rows. This machine does not have a 4 in 1 bucket but just a GP bucket with digging teeth.

Dick - If you want to push trees over, a 4 in 1 bucket is far heavier construction and will withstand tree removal, far better than a GP bucket. A GP bucket is designed for, and works best on picking up and loading stockpiled soil and construction materials such as gravel, clay, road base, etc. Once you start to use a GP bucket for tree removal, you're probably looking at bent cutting edges, a twisted bucket, or cracks .. all of which, it pays to look for, before you buy a traxcavator.

I doubt very much the reason for the machine been offered for sale is the tipping links,we have straightened lots of links from all types of machines that get bent by a careless drivers,that machine looks well used but not abused and given its age it is around the stage when things are starting to wear out,you did not mention the hours,the first thing that caught my eye is the engine guards are missing which is a bad sign,the get left off when there is a heating issue and that would need checking,the running gear looks ok in the picture with the idler well back,the sprocket segement looks to be wearing out of profile a bit,the bushes would need looking at,the ripper is a useful item and it means there is the third valve in the tank that could be used for other ancillary equipment with the ripper off or even a 4 in 1 bucket,the cutting edge on the bucket is worn well back which also means it is worn thin,in general the machine looks to be in good shape and is not tarted up,take the bucket into consideration as you are limited with what the machine can do with a standard bucket,the best thing to do is have a drive on both types and get the one that siuts you best.

dick ,ozdozer and AJ have posted good advice ,the side panels missing is a good heads up ,i think it would be easy to beef up the tipping links if needed
