Hornsby Steam Crawler Update

A number of months ago there was a discussion about the Hornsby Steam Crawler that started out in Dawson City and ended up at Port McNeil on Vancouver Island. From there it was trucked to the 2005 HCEA Show held at Wetaskiwin Alberta and from there it was trucked back to Vancouver BC. For those interested a local fellow by the name of George Hoffman is looking into the task of restoring the machine. He has a web site that gives some history and a number of photos. What is amazing about that machine is .. the utter complexity of it .. the SALT track chain .. and the fact that it has survived so long in the open air, with such a relatively low amount of damage.
One has to wonder what the purchase price was in 1908. Obviously, only a military or mining budget, was capable of affording it ..

Also .. the 3" scale model is a fabulous piece of work. One wonders what it must be like to operate the multitude of controls of a steam engine, in conjunction with crawler controls .. no wonder there are two guys on the machine in the 1908 film ..
