Cat 22 Clutch problems.

Just got my newly purchased Cat 22 running but when you press the clutch pedal it doesn't stop the clutch and you have to shut down the crawler to change gears. This is my first shot at this. Does anyone have any easy fixes?

There's no easy fix .. the clutch release bearing is likely to have self-destructed, and needs replacing. This means clutch assembly removal.

Hi dclarke,
another thing to check is if you have oil leaking into the clutch compartment which has soaked into the clutch linings causing them to adhere to the flywheel and/or the pressure plate causing the clutch drag.

adjust the transmission brake if it has any lining left. it also helps to oil the spline in the center of the clutch disk.

It may be the clutch brake. First remove the four bolts under the gas tank and remove the plate with the throw out bearing oil cup. Take a mirror and look down and see what the bearing and brake looks like. You should be able to find the problem without removing the gas tank and cradle.The pressure plate should move back when you put in the clutch. You can put the tractor in gear, put in the clutch, put on the brakes and crank over the engine to make sure the clutch is not stuck to the fly wheel. Make sure to remove the spark plug wires so it won't start. A parts book will help you understand the workings of the tractor. If the clutch bearing is bad you have to remove the engine. If the clutch brake is bad, it can be fix thru the opening. If the yoke is cracked and is flexing, then it can be replaced thru the opening. There also is a adjustment for the clutch brake made thru the opening. Most of the time the clutch brake facing is missing with the rivets just hanging there. This can be repaired thru the opening. I have had all of these problems and a few more . Let us know what you find. Bill

On a 22 I have the crankshaft thrust bearing (center main) was worn through and had damaged both the crank and the block. The crank had more than 1/8" end play resulting in a clutch that wouldn't release.

Well, on mine, the "slots" on the yoke that slip over the pins on the throwout are worn out. So much so that the yoke has rubbed against the clutch at some point. I suspect since there's that much wear on that piece, I'm probably due for a new clutch, too. I'm pretty much stalled at this point for the time being.

It seems when I push in the clutch it labours the motor. I don't know if this elps or not. Thanks for all the help so far.
