Default Timing mag drive gear on D6-9U

I tried to start the D6 today to break up ice in the driveway. No spark. So I removed the mag and took it to the garage to check. Filed points and reset gap, sparks fine now. Timed mag on the bench. Went back out to time pony engine and while turning the flywheel, I hear a clunk. The mag drive gear fell off its shaft.
Does anyone know how to get the mag drive gear back in time with the crankshaft, short of removing the pony to remove the timing gear cover?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chuck

    Yah, that happens,
Just put it back aligning the "M" on the idler gear with the "M" on the mag drive gear.

Default Early D318 Pony Mag Timing

    Hi Team,
sometimes the older 318's did not have the "M" marks on the mag drive tang or drive coupling so the scans below should get you there.
    Cheers,
    Eddie B.

Thanks OM, I tried that a couple of times and could not get the engine to run. In my parts book the crank gear is 18T and the idler is 44T and the mag drive gear is 18T. With this combination it is possible to align the "M" marks while the "I" marks are nowhere near each other causing the mag spark at the wrong time.

Yes, there probably is more than one position where the "M" will come around but if you use the combination of info that edb posted where the flywheel timing mark is correct for #1, the rotor is in the right position, the impulse coupling aligned as well as the "M" matched that will be the correct position.

Chuck, you have a hunting gear set there. 18/44 so the letters will not always line up on the idler gear. I suspect you will need the engine on TDC#1 and mesh the mag gear letter'd tooth with the idler.

Thanks OM, Eddie and Bob. I got the old girl running today. It never occured to me to time the engine, time the mag, and then set the mag drive gear to match the mag impulse coupling regardless of the gear timing marks. Thanks again for your patience and advice.
