In 1891, Daniel Best’s first announced the manufacture of the “Best Improved Gas Engine.” He described how his improved engine design was superior to ordinary electric ignition gas engines available at that time, stating; “The ordinary machines can produce the spark only at one place, as they do it automatically by the cylinder head.” Daniel Best had by a series of experiments determined the proper point to take advantage of the concussion of the gases, determining that maximum power was achieved by igniting the fuel mixture when the gases were near the maximum compressed state.
