Under the seat, remove cross plate cover above steering clutch housing.
Doesn't an Orchard have a low slung seat off the back?
In that case the metal plate on the transmission (normally under the seat) would possibly be under the steering lever bracket mounts as they should be moved rearward to accomadate the lower seat?
👍
on a tail seat 5J D2 the steel plate is under the fuel tank .
This is sounding harder than it needs to be, The cover is imeadiatley behind the stearing levers. Typically just ahead of a seat fuel tank. Its under a flate plate cover that held down with 6 or 8 ---3/8 bolts. The cover measures about 5 x 10 inches If you have a PTO this plate will be removed to install the PTO shifter.
I looked this morning in the D2/R2 book I have and apparently the low seat I was thinking of doesn't exist on these tractors.
SO rome and steve are correct!
Thanks for the replies everyone.
After looking again yesterday I think Rotorbob has to be right.
There is no plate like the top seat models.
There is a large plate under the fuel tank that I think is also the top cover to the transmission.
You must have to access them through there.
maybe this will help:
It is from Form 10430-2 operators instructions for 3J1-8600 and 5J1-10561 D2
Your access cover does not change between a top seat and a tail seat. However, like Bob said, the access cover has a fuel tank sitting on top of it now that the seat and sheet metal have been reconfigured. If you blow out the dirt, leaves and twigs under the tank, you should be able to see where you're going. Now is a good time to pull your hood and fuel tank and repair everything that has been neglected.
So I went to Vintage Crawlers or something like that and found this photo.
There is indeed a "Tailseat" model, which I thought I was sure of the first post I made.
Then I checked a book that kept showing "Orchard " models but apparently they were standard models with orchard fenders.
I new the levers had to be moved back but in my mind couldn't "see/visualize" the fuel tank being mounted as rotorbob stated.
Well here it is!![]()
