I have been talking with a guy on ACME living near Fairbanks in Alaska .His Dad left him a D46U that is badly in need of walking gear .He is a long way from nowhere ,So wondering if there is any ACMOC members that could help him out with info for him .
He has not been having much luck with the local Cat dealer and his internet searches have not brought him much joy ..Was funny , As i did a Google search and came up with a link to the partfinder at his local Cat dealer .He has registered ,but he said will take 3 days to validate him to use the site .
Any help will be greatly apreciated .

I don't get to Fairbanks much but there are a few places in Anchorage that might be worth checking. First off, I'm surprised that NC Machinery was not helpful. The Anc branch has always treated me well even though they know I am very small potatoes. For things NC doesn't have or they are too expensive, Patson Parts is my choice as a starting point. Rod either has it or usually knows somebody who does. His father started the business years ago as a gov't surplus dealer and over the years they have acquired an amazing variety of parts for just about any machine. Jack Sharp has been in the biz for quite a few years and is also an excellent resource. He downsized a few years ago and no longer has a business address but Rod Patson could put you in touch with him. If there are aftermarket parts available, Automatic Welding sells Berco and Italitrak parts. Vern there is another very knowledgeable gent and usually willing to help. There are enough small-time gold miners around that use obsolete worn out equip and even the larger suppliers generally are more than willing to sell to them. Maybe this will give you a starting point and open up opportunities.

You're welcome, I hope your friend can find the parts he needs. A lot of old equipment makes its way up here and is usually run to destruction and left where it died. Sometimes a cache of parts shows up, it is just a matter of patience and luck to find it. I fell into a bunch of early D8 parts several years ago and it is nice to be able to have some of the things I need right at hand. Gemdozer has it right about shipping, a good price Outside becomes prohibitive when freight is figured in. If there is a way to get somebody who is regularly bringing in freight to let you piggyback yours it is much more reasonable. Otherwise, repairing what you have is about the only option and for that a machine shop or a friend who owns one is almost a necessity. I guess the point of all this rambling is that keeping old stuff running in remote places is a challenge and becomes a labor of love rather than hard-nosed economics.
