Hello I picked up this Cat pull type grader and I have gotten some good info from here, but still have some questions. The s.n. for it is 5D 199 and was wondering what year it might be? It looks similar to the 15 trailer patrol but doesn't have the same serial no. ID, the wheel base is longer and is roughly 1500lbs. heavier, so do they consider this a different model than the 15? Its missing the forward controls so I would like to complete that part if possible, and also wondered about the front wheels should they have the rubber outside like the rear wheels do? Any help or information is much appreciated.

the 5D prefix is for the trailer patrol i think a total of 250 were made.
Now the hard part is finding the controls for the tractor to operate the grader.

Thanks for the information chriscokid, it probably would be tuff to find the controls for a crawler tractor but I have them for the John Deere D industrial that was also used as a companion tractor to pull the Caterpillar trailer patrol. My tractor is also a 1936 so glad the grader is same year. I have added a couple old pictures to show the combination.

I had a JD D at one time with the low industrial gears in the rear end and still have 2 trailer patrols, I hunted hi and low to find the controls to mount on the tractor but no luck , you have a very special piece there , you should be able create the shafts etc to complete it.

Ron I bought this tractor back in 1994 on a farm sale, what history I could find out was that the tractor was purchased new by a township in Brown Co. Kansas and later was bought at sometime by the farmer that had the auction. I was told by an older gentleman that had been on the township board that the D was used to maintain their roads. I always hoped to find a patrol that would be paired with the D. This winter I happened to see this one on craigslist and bought it. I know of 1 other D with the dual pto and have heard of one maybe in California but have not confirmed it yet.

I didn't know they made those, I'd like to run one someday. Does the dual PTO come with the tractor as an attachment or was it sold with the trailer patrol? Also, I've never seen those lift type 'cylinders'. I know they have to be mechanical but how do they work?

That combination looks like it would have cut into Cat's crawler sales a bit but I guess their sales alliance with John Deere worked out for them for a while.

I am pretty sure that it would have been sold with the tractor but also as far as I know it was only to run the Caterpillar trailer patrol. They made less than 100 John Deere D industrials and I'm not aware that they have any records that show how many were equipped with the dual pto.

I haven't had the lift apart but looks like maybe a ring and pinion type with a threaded rod in the center of the ring for up and down movement?

I believe they work similar to a screw jack....kind of a big threaded stud inside the "cylinders" lol

the blade lift jacks are the same as any other grader of that time period. same part number and operation.
The only difference is they are turned 180 deg. so that the input shaft is facing toward the front of the grader instead of the rear.

Eric Just making sure,the mechanical lift is generic? Like a hydraulic ram today,could be on any make of machine,or other than a grader. Or is it just any grader from that time that had the power lift was the same mechanism.

So the lift is made by someone other than Cat or the grader maker they bought?
