This Terracer was setting alongside the hiway just south of Ellsworth, KS.
I took the pictures last October.

Art...if "catskinner" who lives in Ellsworth, Ks see's that pic, I bet he can tell you the whole history of it. Looks to be a homemade rig as I see the IH tractor dosen't have any front wheels.

I wanted to post it on the ACME board and see if he responded. I was going to "tweak" him for not being aware of what was going on in his own back yard.
It was a nice trip, I went up Highway 14, and came back on Highway 99.
I made a jog over to Sylvan Grove, and bought a sundial from the Vonada Stone Co., and found several old stone bridges along with abandoned stone houses and barns.

Art,
You went right by my place and didn't stop in. Shame on you. The terracer is still sitting there and probably will be for quite awhile. Belongs to the son of the guy I used to work for. Helped build that a little bit. Did you go thru town of over the RR overpass? I live right NW of the overpass. Vonada Stone makes a lot of stone products. How do you know about them from Texas?
Larry, The conveyer is from a #12 grader that we picked up in Topeka the night the big tornado hit Topeka. We left there about 4 hrs. before it hit. The rig has rear steering and the you don't turn around with it. You go forward and backward with it. Disc will swivel around.
You bet you bottom dollar I knew it was working there.
They built a terracer on a 4 wheel Austin Western
grader but it didn't work as good as this machine does. catskinner

I went thru town, as it looked like the highway around town was completely closed. I ate lunch at the Pizza Hut, drove around and looked at the abandoned hospital (school)(?), and went looking for a place that sold a brand of Diesel that I have a card for.
I have always liked the looks of the engraved stone signs, and several years ago, I got a brochure of theirs at a gas station near Beloit. I had them make a pair of signs with mine and my ex-wife's names on them. Something different as everybody down here has welded or laser cut gates and nameplates. The pickup was getting really low on fuel, as the ex TOTAL (?) station that would accept my Diamond Shamrock card that is in Sylvan Grove, now sells Sinclair, which I don't have a card for anymore, I finally found a Shell station that night in Hastings, NE. Note: If you don't have a Conoco/Phillips or Cenex (CO-OP) card in most of these towns, be prepared to pay cash or you will be SOL.
One of the best things about this trip, was that I didn't have to haul my trailer, and I gathered up all the remaining odds and ends that I had purchased in the last couple of years, and it all fit in the bed of the pickup.

Catskinner....That is an enterresting belt terracer. Used to be some used down here. Did not work as well as they could, because they built from only one side. Did not put in fills over the gullys. We finally received moisture, no snow. Feel much better now. Darrol

Darrol ,
No, they won't do the fill work. That was my job when I worked for them. I helped him get started on a terrace and then when it was done, had to do the cut and fill with a D7 and scraper or JD paddle scraper later on. Then finish grading the terrace. We had 2" of rain and woke up this morning to 4" of snow that I don't remember them saying any thing about. With this storm and last week, we've had 3.50 in. of rain, all nice and slow. This was a wet snow also. I-70 is still closed from Salins to Oakley and I bet old 40 is too. I need both of those to get out to Sharon Springs to see UP Rotary snow blower work on the blocked KP Line. Darn it all.
When I started working for them in 58, we built twerreaces from both sides. In the late60's some time they went to just the one side building. You always had to grade in the back side so water won't travel around on it and then wash down to the next one. A double belt terracer is built out at Wakeeney and they have one of those also but you still just build from one side. Malsom is the brand by Bud Malsom. catskinner

Art,
If you went Sout from the Pizza Hut and saw the hospital building, thatis what it was, the old one. You were just 2 blocks North of my place. That is right, I forgot about the K-156 By pass being closed then. It opened up shorthy after Thanksgiving. Still not done as they have to put the finish coat on it next year. It's open now but will close again in 07. If you would have went down K-156 from the jct. there South of town, you would have seen some 627F and 621 scrapers, dozers, backhoes working on it. Will close that next year and remove blacktop and cut the hills down and raise the low spots. Over 1 million yds. to move total.
