When the need arises to bleed the fuel injection system of air is doing it thru the fuel injection pump vents the best way or should you use the loosening of the injection line nut? I have the wrench to loosen the pump vents. I know the procedure for bleeding the system just curious on the pump vents. Thank you.

I generally bleed sequentially all the way from the fuel filter housing to the injection valve.

Vents are the best. Loosening and tightening the lines can over time may damage ferrules on the lines. But later pumps did away with vents, so I could be wrong.

No, you are right. I caught hell finding a replacement D50 line that was buggered by a hammer mechanic. If you bleed from the line, use an easy touch.

The vents easily bleed the air from he fuel gallery from hardly any pressure, leave them open with a full tank and the fuel will run straight through, bleeding at the lines needs the throttle shut off and some pressure at least to lift the non-return valves in the top of the pumps.

This brings to mind my question about my D4 6U. Where can I buy the wrench for the vents? I know my dad had one for his RD4, but I cant find it. Thanks, Grant.

I have the version that goes on a 1/4" ratchet that I use with a 3" extension.
I've posted the part number before, if no one finds it in a SEARCH, I'll get it tonight.

If you have a CAT salvage yard around or know of one, how about checking there for the little wrench. catskinner

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
