At 4 and a half turns I'd say your spring is weak. I replaced 1 spring and it made a huge difference. All the others I've worked on where just out of adjustment

Got new latches and spring. Old spring quite worn and the reason the screws were in 4 and a half turns.

I wonder if the spec was changed? The longer spring looks to have heavier wire. They both have about 19 turns

Which one is the new 6B1909? Looks like the shorter one has the heavier wire and looks like the coils are too close together. Should be able to post a pic of the 6B1909 if I get to the shop.

According to Jim's photo of the one from Cat looks correct and looks like the shorter one you have. Sometimes I have gotten parts from Florin that were the "old style" and not an updated part like I would get from Cat. Do some measuring and see if Jim can match what you have there.

Couple pics of spring length and diameter. Plastic is 3 mil so subtract .006 from reading for actual. Hated to take out of package as I tend to lose small items.
Length ends up at 2.065 inches and diameter is .375 inches. These were new from Cat about 2 months ago. Someone figured out the spring constant a few months back on this board.

Hi Team,
did an Advanced search and found some discussion on said latches as indicated by D4Jim :-
www.acmoc.org/bb/showthread.php?32536-Sp...latch+spring+tension
copy from above thread by Neil :-
Measured my new spring: 2 1/16 free length, with 10#, it compressed 3/16. I'll pull the old one out this afternoon and compare but judging by the ease of adjustment, the old one had lost some spring.
and another by cojhl2 :-
Thank you Neil so much.
The spring rate should be fairly constant through the working range of the spring. K=10/(3*.0625) = 53.33lbs/in
Last edited by cojhl2; 09-01-2019 at 12:22 PM. Reason: fix formula
Accuracy to me is unknown so please accept it as written and kindly supplied by others on this BB.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Update - the old spring is right at 2 inches while the new one is almost 2 1/2 inches. I got a new one from Cat yesterday. Cost $10.76 and was worth it. Thanks to everyone who helped. Photo is the old spring (smaller one) and the one I got from Florin (larger one).
