I know every must get sick of reading these but I was hoping to get some input on where to go for obsolete parts. The oil return tube inside the pony motor of my D4 cam off and bounced around inside the block and slightly chewed up both pistons. I went to Cat and the .020 pistons are NLA ( PN 8H2762 or 2F3664). The rings are available but not the pistons. I called Florin and they do not have them either. Anyone know what my options are for pistons? Can any suggest another vendor to try? Lastly, do the .020 over rings have to be run with the .020 piston? Is it possible to put oversized rings on a standard piston? That might be a dumb question. Thanks.

Alex, you are right, there are thousands of old threads on the topic, if you do a search through many of them you will see there is a company in Australia that has been making pilot motor pistons for a loooong time, you tell them what size you need and they supply the piston, rings and pin to suit your bores.

The company is J.P Pistons, they have a website, the D2/D4 pilot piston is P/N JP0154, last time I asked, a new piston with rings and pin was around $US80 a piece, your other option is to re-sleeve your block back to standard size, or put a request in the For Sale / Wanted section of the ACMOC magazine and on here, someone might have oversize pistons.

you cant run different size rings on a piston they are matched sizes.

you have 2 options get oversize pistons made by a company such as j.p pistons in south aust.

or have the motor sleeved back to a size
it is also possible to get pistons from something else turned down to fit and re-groove them though a set from j.p. is probably cheaper.

as for the feed tube try a hydraulics supplier such as enzed or pirteck they may be able to supply the tubing and fittings if you can get an example to copy.

Have you considered adding a direct starter? My 7U is 43,159 and I know yours has the plate and studs already factory installed. I have a 12V starter and will keep the pony for cold starts too.

Did you install the starter yourself?
