Hi,
the tapping as described above is done inside the fuel injection pump as a last resort if sharply pulling back towards the operators seat a few times from the full forward/shut off position. This lever movement, fore or aft, is as viewed when sitting in said operators seat fails to achieve rack run position.
The lever detent can at times be hard to pass the shutoff position to fuel on.
It often takes a good strong jerk back to get results.
Simply pulling the lever back until it stops moving will result in the linkage/injection pump rack, still being in the shutoff position--needs the good solid jerk to get past it--same goes for shutting the engine off ,the lever needs a good solid bump forwards to pass the low idle position to achieve shutoff.
This is so that you do not accidentally shut the engine down when you simply want to go to low idle speed.

This video may help some--look for other you tube videos on the pinion overhaul etc. about your machine also by Squatch253

Cheers,
Eddie B.

I vote for it being in the off position. Very often a new owner will not realize there is a lot of throttle movement in the off position and not pull it hard enough to get past the detent. As others have said, just give it a good hard pull, You will be enjoying your new machine soon.

No it was a stuck rack I beat it with a rubber mallet on the body close to the throttle. Now I'm in the process of finishing off the rest of the repair the pony had a cooked cam gear I replaced it and would have rebuilt the engine but the thing was in such beautiful condition I held off on the rings bering etc Fixed the carb (had pin holes in the bowl) with JB weld. I have to put the fire wall back but I thought it more Important to finish the hose replacement. This machine is a 57 D2 with 1600 original hrs a toolbar w/rear attachments a PTO and rear hydraulics it is a surviver and I think I'm in love. Have a good night guys Pictures are coming when its complete (rain tomorrow) maybe Sunday Thanks again Michael

there should be a notch for full noise and a notch for idle. to make starting easier push the throttle past the full speed notch to give max fuel (sort of like choke on a petrol) this is only for starting once it fires and is running pull back to a fast idle the idle notch can be hard to feel so pull gently.
