For what its worth, the bleeders on the injection pump ( behind the fuel lines) aren’t too bad if you use a 7mm open end wrench. ( from memory - it could be 6 mm)

All - I interpreted what Eddie said was that #4, which was causing the least amount of air escape, is usually the problem I went out this evening and got video of what the lines at the injectors looked like. The first is cylinder 1 and the last is cylinder 4. Each is opened 1.5 to 2 turns.

how about running a can of injector cleaner threw it???


not a bad idea, are you talking the liquid cleaner you would add to your fuel tank and run the cleaner+fuel thru the engine? or something else?

-while we're at it, does anybody have a success story doing that? what brand cleaner? etc??


I run Power Service in my farm tractor's fuel and my D4 and 112 year round. There is a Power Service for Winter (Treatment) and one for the rest of the year (Kleen). Knock on wood but I have never had any injector or fuel problems in the past 25 years. In those 25 years I have never pulled an injector.
Like the old saying "buy Clean Fuel, Keep it Clean".

Check to make sure plungers are not stuck up in the pump. Looks like they are not pumping at all.

Thanks Kracked. I was thinking about that too. 1 and 2 are sucking air from somewhere. I've bled them enough that it shouldn't have that much air. Eddie said that one of the injectors could be stuck open which would pressurize the others. This makes sense to me in the way the air bubbles seem to be pressurized in 1 and 2.

That is possible also. I am not seeing any pumping action. #4 was really hard to see. I would pull the side cover off the pump first and see if the plungers are stuck first thing. Also make sure the rack isnt stuck in the off position.

dont just do one injector do them all so they all work evenly and don't cause other problems. half jobs only create more work later on. any good diesel shop injection shop should be able to test them for you or if you have a pop tester it easy to do your self the hard bit is rebuilding the injectors. testing is simply connecting to the tester and stroke the leaver slowly until the injector fires and watching the gauge and injector to see if it leaks down and at what pressure it fires and what the spray pattern looks like it should be a clean even spray with no dribble at the pressure listed in the engine specs. if they fail test they need to be cleaned and rebuilt followed by retest which the shop will do for you.

absolutely 100% Trainzkid! you will only be chasing your tail if testing some of the injectors don't correct the problem...

-doing all 4 also gives you a new baseline to start from...make a note of date, hours on machine etc....now going forward you are likely good for xxxx amount of hours with clean fuel, filters, and some luck etc...you can concentrate on other areas if performance is not up to snuff..

always dropping GOLD, all you have to do is just pick it UP !

Agree I need to do them all if the injectors are the problem. Problem is, I need to isolate the problem and find out why the air is getting in the system. This weekend I plan to pull the cover off and check to make sure the plungers are not stuck, then my next attention will be to the injectors.
