D2 5U electric pony motor starter problems

Cub cadet had a 3 coil regulator belt driven Starter/Generator setup - kept the battery charged as would the cat setup help some to charge battery. Bob

That's right. Back in the 60's or so they had a little after thought starter / generator driven from the front mower drive as I remember. I wonder when they changed to the gear driven system.

The new unit arrived and it looks like exactly what I need....except for one thing.  As you can see, the front of the old one had square shoulders that fit through the hole in the dash.  The new one has sloping shoulders which makes it too large to fit through the hole in the dash. Soooo ... I can either grind down the shoulders to make them square so it fits or I can cut the hole in the dash bigger.  Grinding on the generator would void any possible return while on the other hand the dozer is in the field and I don't know if I have enough extension cords to reach it to either use my grinder or saber saw.  Just another dilemma.

I have come to realize that I am not repairing an old Cat. I am buying a new one, one part at a time.

from the existing stater pics it doesn't appear that the mounting boss extends thru the bulkhead? and i don't see any bolt heads on the bulkhead? any way you could bring a portable generator with you to the machine to enlarge the hole

It looks like the mounts to the bulkhead had to have some sot of bushing between the bulkhead and the gen flange.  Just make longer bushings and move the entire gen back a 1/4 inch of so that the casting does not have to  protrude through the bulkhead.  Might have to revise or washer up the rear mout some but saves grinding or cutting a larger hole. Looks like the shaft is long enough to accommodate that and still line the belt up with the pony.

I do not see any preview on the posting site

Just take out the two long bolts and swap the end caps.

After reviewing all your input and further investigating swapping the end caps, I decided to enlarge the hole in the dash board. That accomplished, the starter was installed and it works great. Thank you all, again.

Right off hand I cannot think of any starter / generators on equipment that are belt driven. Smaller ones like lawnmowers are gear driven and electronically switched from start to gen.

this is quite common on golf carts. they have a special regulator to allow this.
many lighting plants were electric start via the generator. my Ronaldson Bros & Tippet 32 volt set is set up this way.
some of the lateset automotive engine designs are using this design too for less weight and more efficiency.
