Cat 22 pilot bearing question

More
2 years 6 months ago #232194 by Peter C
Hi,
Has anyone changed the pilot bearing outer race on a Cat 22 flywheel?
Any tips on getting the old one out and installing the new one in without ruining it? I can't lift the flywheel into an oven but I can freeze the race.
I have done wheel bearing races and pilot bushings before but not a race this big. The old race has some small pits in it but so does the inner race (transmission input shaft) which isn't getting changed.
Thanks
Pete

Looking at the parts book, it looks like you might be able to get to the backside of that bearing if you pull the flywheel, then press out the old one, otherwise a blind hole bearing puller such as:

Other thing you can do, is weld something that you can pull on to the old race.

Hi Peter,
if you have an arc welder handy you can remove the rollers etc. and run a bead of weld around the race bore--let it cool and it will come out easily.
Or simply remove the flywheel as suggested above being certain to find the crank flange to flywheel chisel timing alignment marks on each component for aligning when refitting the F/W or when you come to do on-engine injection pump lifter settings you will be in more trouble than the early settlers.
Scan below is by Cat on cooling/heating bearings for fitment, it gives the safe maximum and minimum temperature for the bearings.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

If the bearing is complete with inner race, bearings and seal it maybe possible to fill behind the pilot bearing with grease, then using a punch that is close to inner race size hit it and it may pop the bearing out as the hydraulic force could push it out of the fly wheel? I have used it before no heat or cold required, just grease, punch and a good knock.I hope not helps?

Great tips. The flywheel is off of the engine because I had a third party ring gear installed.
Thank you all.
