help with fan belt was created by jbernd56
Need a fan belt for 1942 R2   4J1098.  Parts book says 6B 1089.  Does anybody know if that is a good number.  OR does anybody know a crossover number and belt that will work?
I have not tried local CAT place yet. Was hoping someone had already gone down that road and could save me a few steps.
This particular model has a generator, but it runs on a different belt and I have not started on that project yet. It has what appears to be a homemade adjuster on it.  The generator mounts solid on the engine and not sure how the belt stays tight.  I have the adjuster working well for the fan belt.

As always, any help will be apprieciated.

6B1089 comes up as a bearing race cup.

Fan belt is 6b1039 or 2b0463. The generator belt has no tensioning provisions, as things wear a thick paper shim is often used under the generator.

Many thanks! You are correct, it is 1039. I typed 1089 instead. I will see if NAPA can cross that number. If not I guess I will go CAT. NAPA is much closer to my house!
When I was looking at the mounting for the generator, I thought I was seeing some kind of stuff that looked like tin foil or some kind of thin metal still attatched to the machine. In the parts book, they list 3 shims. probably what I am seeing.
Since the fan belt was a good number, can I ASS U ME generator belt number good too? 5B 243.
As always, thank you for the help. Worth every penny of dues to belong to the club, to be able to access the vast quantity of knowledge just a click away!

5B243 is the correct number, the size is, 11/16" x 38.5" I don't think they are available from Cat, and finding an exact replacement may be tough, finding the same width and length may not be possible, as most of the replacement belts I see are a little narrower. That may not matter with applications like the fan belt where there is some adjustment available, but with the generator belt, you may have to use a slightly shorter belt if it's narrower, and there is usually some wear on the pulley.

You are correct, 5B243 is not available. Got the fan belt coming from Waco Tx It amazes me that they can have a 45 inch belt, but not continue to have a 38. Oh well. Thanks for the measurements. Fortunately, the parts store guy and I are neighbors. I am their favorite customer. Between Cushman and Caterpillar, Whenever I come in, all the counter people do a ;quick round of rock paper scissors to see who gets to help me this time!!

If you're ever looking for a generic v-belt, vbeltsupply.com has a wide range that increases in size by one inch. They're as cheap as dirt so when I've purchased, I've ordered the two sizes either side in case the sizing is inaccurate

Cheers,
