Hello everyone,
I have a 1940 D6 2H it leaking coolant from the packing nut on the water pump. How do I go about changing the packing?

Thank you for an advice.

How "bad" is the leak? It is supposed to drip so many drops a minute to lube the packing and keep the shaft from overheating.

It's a steady stream when running from the pony motor side.

most irrigation rural supplies places will have gland packing and good industrial suppliers will have it too.
is there any adjustment left on the gland nut? you remove the nut wipe a bit of marine grease in there and do it up again, if not adjustment left it needs new packing.
if you replace the packing lube the threads on the gland nut with a little graphite grease or nickle anti sieze makes life easier next time.

use a hook and pick tool to remove the old packing

Dealers carried the packing for a 3T D7 at one time; a neighbor substituted it for the packing on his 30. I don't know what the shaft diameters are, perhaps it would work for your RD6 as well; as others suggested, pump packing material should be readily available from an irrigation pump company. JM

On my 1H D8 gland nut was stuck and been leaking for years. With a little heat it came free and I cleaned up the threads, Packing is non specific. 3/8" square I think, cut to length, tighten a bit. Hasn't leaked in years.

Caterpillar still supplies packing for water pumps. At least my dealership was still able to get it back in 2014 or 2015
