To the brains trust.   Located in a shed in Central Queensland, a Cat engine with the serial number 5E5990.   What is it out of, or is this a non captive engine?

5E5501 to 5E6000 are listed as Miscellaneous Engines, maybe a picture or some casting numbers will help.

I had a brief look at it some years back when I picked up a Twenty from the same man.   Is it a six cylinder with two heads, or is my memory playing tricks?

5E would be an early RD-8 engine, six cyl. D11000 model.

Judging by the laundry list of engines this prefix is assigned to, Josh's "miscellaneous engines" sounds like a good description. I think 5E was also assigned to a tractor if I'm not mistaken?

The next move is to check it out and do an appraisal. Let me know CC and we may travel together. Here's hoping someone has a picture of an original.

Photos of 5e mystery engine.   We THINK that the engine may have been fitted to a grader built in Australia under licence to Caterpillar by Steelweld.

Photos of 5E engine in question.   We THINK it may be from a grader, built in Australia by Steelweld, under licence to Caterpillar.   I know several machines or impliments were built under licence in Australia and New Zealand.    Still not 100% sure!
