Nothing comes to mind of why the brake would make a banging sound. But I have not worked on a D4 back end.
To help all understand, dose the noise happen every time you apply the brake, even very lightly? There is no jerking going on when the noise happens? As per Mschwatz comments, does the final drive have oil and is not leaking big puddles when it sits?

A seriously loud bang, more than I'd expect from the brake band. Does sound like a serious problem to me.
Though it never happens except when applying that brake, even when say, going up a hill. We have lots of hills here.
Will look things over as you suggest.

Good ideas! No obvious signs of trouble on the right sprockets or tracks. Will follow up on your other suggestions. No trouble when going up a steep hill, only hear this when applying the right brake. Busy now, will be a few days before I can fire it up again.
