Video or it didn't happen! : ) That looks like a very effective solution. What is the brand / model of the carb and how did you decide to choose that particular carb? Does it feel like the pony develops full power when cranking the main under compression? What are your plans for an aircleaner?

Cheers,
Neil

The carb I found out is for like a 23hp Kohler. My dad set it up like that around 30 years ago, since even 30 years ago an original carb was impossible to find. And it works very well. The pony engine is very powerful. This is a brand new carb off eBay that I found that said Kohler, looks identical to the one he had on it, which had rusted out from sitting. Just got it to start yesterday and the diesel started right up also. And the carb with adapter actually fits with the air filter pipe and filter on. Not sure if I'm goin to put it back on, he never had it on it. We will have to pull the engine and see whats goin on with the clutches though since we can't get it into gear anymore. It was nice to see it run again and run well.

I also tried to upload videos but the file was evidently to big to upload.

That's a great story. I imagine the original carbs that a lot of us still have would have been good back in the day when they were new but I think time and wear makes them a bit less "accurate". An adaptor like the one your Dad made is very simple to make so anyone with a welder could do it. It'd be a good idea to reconnect the air cleaner because a) you have it and b) no need to unnecessarily dust the pony if you don't have to. How do you control the throttle / is it connected to the governor or do you have to manage the throttle directly?

Cheers,
Neil

I just manage it directly. I just started it again a few minutes ago, now just sitting here watching the diesel idle. I had to use starting fluid for the pony engine to get to pop off, but once it's goin it packs a lot of power.

I put some springs on to hold throttle, and then used some bailing wire to put it where I want. Also before I started I had to put the wico mag back together and had my brother sand blast the fuel tank and paint it "since he works for cat" cat yellow is easily obtainable.

Can I ask how you check the oil in the starting engine?

I honestly don't know. I don't remember if it was separate from the diesel or not. After looking at my photo it looks like there's a plug by the governor lever, I wonder if that's where you check it?

To check the oil level on a starting engine without a rod-type oil level checker there should be a cock on the oil pan.
