Years ago I bought a D2 with a Cat #44 pump and 2S blade that was very slow to cycle... I changed the oil and filter and all was good.
The filter on the left is a fuel filter, on the right is the filter for the #44 pump.. although similar in size, I don't believe them to be interchangeable
Even in 2008 the hydraulic filter was pricy from Cat..

I see what you're saying, but the part numbers don't jive. Part # 2A-5886 is listed at the filter for the #44 hyd. control, and that is the string wrapped filter you show on the left side!
The part # on the filter (element) I removed is 7F-7233, that is unless I misread the last didgit.

that filter is available. or it was a couple yrs ago when i ordered one from the dealer.. if you have got a parts book for the hydrualics and the crawler itself get one. they are individual books. with part numbers the dealers are much more helpful. the metal housing element is the right one. the string wound is fuel filter. yes not cheap. if memory serves it was around 100 bucks in aus.

Well as with all things Cat, it is serial number dependent... early versions of the pump take one filter, later ones take another. Based on the picture you posted, yours is the later version 7fF7238.

I checked online with Foley and should be able to get one (7F7238) Monday.
Is the "cover" that holds the hyd element in place sealed with the "O" ring only, no gasket on the surface where the 4 bolts go?
Thanks for the help.
