Neil I completely agree. My pivot shaft bearings extremely worn and rusted. I have not dismantled linkages yet. I'm planning replace at least the pins in linkages. Possibly rebush linkages if necessary. I have new bearings for pivot shafts and steering clutch bearings already. I prefer to check everything while I'm in there. Transmission bearings seem tight after initial check. I'm going to pull both pinions just to confirm they are OK.

The linkage roller bearings used are hard to find. There's small soft plugs, like freeze plugs pressed in the castings that will drive out when you remove the shafts on the transmission cover.
I made new shafts that were worn badly and used the old bearings. They weren't the best but they worked.

I have some new bearings for the steering clutch pivot shafts. I think a couple of the original ones are usable, but most are rusty. This machine sat very close to northern California shoreline for past few years, so there's some rust and stuck components. I think it was old magnet who suggested using bushings, which I would have done, but I have the new bearings so I will go that route.

So I just looked through my parts stash and my parts book. The bearings I have are the pivot shaft bearings, 3B570. I do not have the roller bearings 3B568, there are a total of 8 of these bearings used in steering linkages. So I will look for these bearings or consider using bushings.

A fellow on youtube rebuilt his 7U steering and found suitable and available bearings. I think it's this link
- the whole series is pretty good if you want to review it

I did an online search for 3B568 bearing. If you folks are interested check this website, yoyopart.com . It has quite a list of interchange part numbers. Another thing I was thinking about is best type of grease to use in an application like under transmission top cover. I see there is this "polyurea" grease.. seems good, qualities are has thickener, very long life grease used in electric motors, good water displacement. I'm not recommending this to others for use, because I don't know anything about types of grease and uses, do your own homework. Other folks with more expertise may have better suggestions.

The other tactic I've thought about a fair bit is installing a container for dessicant into the steering clutch compartment, possibly on the underside of the covers or something that is easy to get out in order to dry. I could see setting a calendar reminder 4x a year to pull it out and put it in the oven to dry out. Most of the problems I've seen have come from moisture in those compartments
