I have been offered a D7 17A. It was in good condition when it was parked 2 years ago. The current owner didn't think it needed Anti-freeze, and now the engine block is busted. His wife said get rid of it even if you have to pay some one to haul it off.
1. Are blocks available for this tractor?
2. or can it be welded?
3. Should I take it for scrap or try to fix it?
Under carriage is about 75% and it needs paint.

If the block is just cracked, it can be welded unless it's cracked internally. If you want to replace the engine/block, General Gear in Boise 208-342-8911 or Phillips Tractor in Gaston OR 503-662-3929 would be good places to call.

The block can be welded and there are shops that specialize in that type of repair as at the Cat dealer we had a place in Brooklyn NY that done a superior job and there are others around that I knowed of years ago. If you want a used block they are a D339 engine in them.I would have someone experienced in tractors to take a look at it and get their opinion on repairing it.They were a good old tractor.

you could have it metalstiched that always works well. Make sure it isnt cracked internally as well though.

It is very likely only the water jacket. JB Weld may do the job. Bring it home and try it. If the undercarriage is as good as you say it is definately not scrap.

That place I mentioned in Brooklyn would repair a block no matter if it was broke inside or out. They looked almost like new when they came back.

In Seattle there is Locknstitch, a company that supplies metal stitching and or pinning equipment 800-736-8261. In SOME cases JB weld will work. I have repaired cracks in blocks and heads for a number of years and it does work and alot cheaper than welding and the additional costs that come from welding. Post up pics of the cracks you have and I think a suitable solution can be obtained. As stated earlier, the cracks are most likely in the water jacket only If it was running before the owner let it freeze then I would doubt that any mechanically structural cracks exist. I would say buy it and fix it... but then I would buy it just to have a CAT...😄 I could us it right now.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
