Must be stuck between gears-D6-9U 27222

I went to move the D6 out of it parking spot in reverse and shifted to 2nd and seems like I moved the forward/reverse bar too--anyway it acts like its stuck in too many gears and the gear shifter will only move toward 1st. I looked at my parts and service manuals - not afraid to dive in. Just wanted any input from this knowledge base before I do it the hard way. Where is a good place to start?

Thanks in advance.

I hear of this happening every once in awhile. Check the interlock adjustment first before pulling the side cover to see what's going on with the shift rails and detent pawls. May have to get in there with a prybar to sort out the gear positions.

I started to take the covers off over the shifters etc. last night but ran out of time. I'll dig in more Saturday and post the results.
Thanks again Old Magnet

Removed the floor plates and the transmission fill neck. Looked in [the fill neck hole] with a flashlight and didn't like what I saw. Looks like it might be a piece of the shifter forks, tried to get ahold of it with a magnet but it fell to the bottom. The gear shifter is free - feels like I still can get into 1st and 2nd[but not 3-5th]. Forward /reverse is also free. I will drain [11 1/2 gallons] the 90wt. and see what comes out with it. I'm going to try and remove the left side of the transmission cover[shifter assembly] but may have to pull the clutch to get the transmission out. More fun than I wanted to have.
I'll update as I go.

Got the oil drained - one bolt, a nut, broken ring and a spacer came out with it. Thankfully no metal shavings or gear teeth. There is a piece still in the bottom I can't get past a lower shield. Looks like the bolts loosened on a collar on the top shaft "B" and fell into the gears. When it stops raining and snowing I'll try to remove the shifting fork assembly to access the left side. I may not have clearance enough to remove it. Looks like the main clutch comes out first then the transmission. Oh Boy!
I'll update somemore later.

Hi Bob,
I'm afraid you are right:( :( the transmission has to come out.....after the clutch. There is enough room to get the side cover off but to pull the shifter fork assembly and do any work on the transmission it needs to come out. Clutch needs to come out so you can get clearance for the steering booster pump drive shaft. Sounds bad but I think you were lucky to catch it before serious damage.

when you get the trans out, change the imput shaft seal plus the output shaft on the clutch. $30.00 in seals will be cheap in the long run.

thansk
