D4 7U Track Adjustment Question(s)

More
17 years 1 month ago #4092 by Al Ayotte
I have a 1956-or-1957 Cat D4 7U-38165. None of the manuals I have show a picture, a parts breakdown or discuss the track adjusting procedure for these tracks. I believe them to be an early hydraulic adjuster. Can anyone help me with this? I have attached pictures of the assemblies on my D4.

Thanks

Al Ayotte

Al, they are aftermarket adjusters. Maybe "Timberline" If you need a seal for them try to get hold of a guy by the handle of "Halftrack" John Hopp. He got seal for a friends machine.

Hi Al,
Ok, I'll have a go:D :D ....I'd say those are an early version after market hydraulic adjuster alright, prior to the Cat version coming out on the D4 at sr. # 42,915. Usually there are two grease fittings, one to pressurize and one to release. I only see one source to tap on the ones you have so I guess you make connection and pump grease in until you get the proper track adjustment (1-1/2 in.) raise over the carrier roller.

I also have a request, seeing your good with the camera. I see you have a slightly different style of inside support bracket for your blade frame mounting. Is this on a five roller frame by chance? If so I would appreciate a picture of that inner support bracket if you would be so kind. Thanks

Had a problem getting registered Ken. Compuserve changed my Email address so the reply from board bounced back. Things went good when I found out about that and corrected it. Good tobe able to post again.

Bob: Thanks for the input. Can you give me any contact info for "Halftrack"? Also, was "Timberline" the manufacturer of the3 aftermarket adjuster(s)?

Thanks,

Al Ayotte

Thanks for your input, Old Magnet! My machine has the 4 roller configuration, but If you want those pix, I'll take them and send them off for you. Let me know.

Thanks again, Al Ayotte

Hi Al,
Thanks for the response, yes I'd still like a picture of that inside bracket, somethings different there:)

You can usually raise "halftrack" on his IBDozing site:

Thanks for the joint effort on the pictures:D
It's the view in picture #3 (your # 10004) that intrigues me. The brackets I have do not have that tapered (figure) shape and mine are much wider (4-bolt to the frame)
I was wondering if it was a Cat variation to accommodate the five roller frame as the five roller versions I have seen have a big (crude) notch cut in them to clear the spring when the whole mounting group is shoved forward on the frame.
See you have the direct start provision (cover plate) ready to go:) :)
Thanks.
