Cleaning brass data plates

More
17 years 1 month ago #4308 by chugwater crawlers
I just tried using citric acid instead of muriatic acid to clean up a brass data plate. I was trying lemon juice, which was working, until my better half said she had some citric acid in powder form. I mixed it with water and submerged the plate. It took awhile but the plate cleaned up like new. Plus no dangerous vapors.
Anyone else tried it?

I've used that aluminum siding cleaner and the plate turns a copper color then brush in one direction with a scotch bright pad. When I darken down my bronze window frames I manufacture I use this method:
Clean and degrease
Rinse in water
Dip into a dilute of 2-5% sulfuric acid
Rinse in water
Darken with the brown patina (not needed on our plates but you could do this then highlight the text)
rinse
