d6-9u canopy? was created by whiteiron
Does any one have decent pictures or drawings as to how the original wood canopy on the d6-9u looks like? I have the original posts but have no idea how to build one or what its covered with, was thinking of cutting them out of 3/4" red oak. But would like something to go by; I have the parts book drawing but would like further references; thanks. :)

The canopy frame and ribs are constructed of 5/4 red oak with 1/2" marine grade plywood cut into 3" strips for the top. This is all covered by cotton duck canvas that is then painted to match (safety yellow). The canvas is held down with cypress battens. I may have a picture or two of the canopy I built for a Diesel 35 (the predecessor to the RD6). Same basic canopy.

thanks for the info; how did you seal the canvas material? are you saying that you painted over it aswell, also, did you glue the strips together and nail them to the frame individually? thanks

Whiteiron, I,ll jump in here and tell you what we did at the dealer. I can,t remember if we got canvas in rolls from the factory or where they got it but as far as I remember it was treated when we got it so just cut and installed it.

Guess I might as well jump in to:) :)
You should do a little more research on how the D6 canopy is constructed. I have the remnants of canopy that came on my D6 and it is not constructed with 3 in. strips of 1/2 in plywood. The final skin is 1/4 in. plywood with a couple of different height supporting ribs. I kept the salvageable pieces for patterns and believe I have them all....will take a look see check.

OK, checked the pieces and appears to be a full set of samples. The outer frame is 3/4 in. wide material, the two inner frame pieces are 1 in. wide. and all the ribs are the same depth (arched and 1-1/2 in to 1-5/8 deep) and 7/8 in width. The plywood skin is not 1/4 in. it is 3/8.

Attached picture of as purchased.

Might want to build one someday, so is the top curved in two directions like it appears or just arched across from side to side? Sure would be simpler to build if it's just one way, but it doesn't look like it.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

If you weren't clear on the other coast and nearby I'd let you use what I have for patterns but I do not trust shipping. Tracing patterns or scaled drawings is probably the next alternative. When would you need them.....last thing I need is another project. Does your canopy have any of the brackets used to tie it together?

ccjersey....yes, curved in both directions.

As usual with Cat there are a variety of styles......early/late???

 Looks like the one in the first picture, I have the posts and the little square sheetmetal pieces with the four holes in them. and the answer to your question about when; This is something I would like to start soon, I would be satisfied with anything you or anyone else could send my way, tracings of the old pieces, measurements, closeup photos would be great. I think it is very important to preserve this stuff for future generations to see and learn about, too much of our past has already gone the way of the junkman:( thanksagain
